The Malawi Economic Justice Network (MEJN), in partnership with the Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), Oxfam Malawi, and the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA Malawi), organized a youth meeting at the Blantyre City Town Hall under the theme “Empowering Young Voices in Malawi’s Economic Governance and Policy Dialogue.”
Corruption, coupled with limited fiscal space, remains a major obstacle to development, with young people bearing the greatest burden of these economic challenges. This was a key message from Mr. Mavuto Bamusi in his keynote address during today’s townhall meeting with Blantyre youth. The meeting, held at Blantyre City Council, is part of ongoing youth engagement meetings taking place across the country’s regions. Participants included students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS)and the University of Malawi (UNIMA), as well as representatives from the Blantyre Urban Youth Network.
The Chairperson of the Blantyre Urban Youth Network,Kelvin Chang’ambika, encouraged fellow youth not only to follow the money butalso to take action to drive change. The Senior Economist from ECAMA emphasized the importance of tracking youth-related allocations in the National Budget, including the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), and encouraged young peopleto actively follow up and benefit from these opportunities.
