Today, the Economics Association of Malawi (ECAMA), together with partners Oxfam in Malawi, Malawi Economic Justice Network-MEJN, and Malawi Institute of Southern Africa Malawi, concluded this month’s drive to enhance economic awareness for improved decision-making in Malawi through a public lecture held at DMI St. John the Baptist University in Mangochi.
The lecture, delivered under the theme “Taming Inflation: The Role of Monetary Policy,” was presented by Dr. Wytone Jombo, a Principal Economist in the Macroeconomics and Forecasting Division at the Rserve Bank of Malawi (RBM).
The Dean of Students at DMI, Mr. Benard Gauti, expressed appreciation for the lecture, noting that it will not only inspire students but also positively influence how they understand key economic issues such as inflation. Students also agreed with the ECAMA Vice President’s remarks, Mr. Hellings Nasoni, that inflation has significantly affected their daily lives, as their pocket money now purchases fewer groceries than before.
The ECAMA Vice President emphasized the importance of such platforms in strengthening students’ understanding of economic issues and supporting informed decision-making.
Mr. MacPherson Mdala, the country focal point of OXFAM Malawi, commended the students for showing up and emphasizing importance of engaging the youth as the project was also creating a platform where their voices could be heard and be part of the discussions around economic governance.
